"Who Is More Trouble Than He's Worth?".

Posted 01/24/2008 09:57 AM by cmonks in I Am So Very Very Sorry.

jennnnnngs.jpgHenry Santoro has been the morning newsman on a local radio station, WFNX, for the last 25 years or so. He's somewhat of an institution, and as morning drive time radio personalities go, he's not half bad. Or wasn't half bad. He quit live on-air this morning.

Why? Because after airing a recorded interview yesterday with all-time Jeopardy champ Ken Jennings, Henry gave out the wrong dates for his upcoming appearances in Boston. Apparently, Henry said Jennings would be in town this weekend, when in fact he's not scheduled to appear until two weeks from now.

It seems Ken's publicist and many of his crazed fans berated the radio station yesterday, calling in to complain about Henry's error, so much so that Henry couldn't take it anymore. Thus this morning, with a trembling voice, he resigned from the station after reading his 9:00 am news update.

As many of you know, I can relate to how Henry feels. I too, have been the victim of a Ken Jennings hissy fit. Actually, it was more a collective hissy fit on the part of his many, many fans. They are incredibly loyal. And bonkers.

While I'm sorry to see this happen to Henry Santoro -- I've listened to him on and off since I was a wee teenage C -- a part of me is relieved to know that it isn't just me. Ken Jennings clearly has a machine of obsessive, crazy people behind him that's not be messed with. Who knew a game show winner would have so much weight?

Thus far, this is the only mention of the incident on Jennings' board. My guess is that Isaac guy played a role in all of this. Way to go, Isaac. Way. To. Go. You made your game show hero look like a monster.

Anyway, I've learned my lesson, so I won't say anything more. My thoughts are with you, Henry. Keep fighting the good fight.

Comments.

I heard it this morning as it was happening, and I was so heartbroken and stunned to hear Henry quit, I hoped it was a prank. Oddly though, I had no idea who Ken Jennings is, and I wasn't listening yesterday, so I had no idea what had happened to get him so upset.

We love you, Henry! Please come back!

A: Ken Jennings

Q: Who is the future iron-fisted overlord of humanity?

Henry DJ'd my Bat Mitzvah in 1994, and I listened to him every day for about 10 years after that, always thinking, "Hey, I know him!" Henry, don't quit! Jennings isn't worth it!!

Do you honestly think a few phone calls are enough to make a newsman quit? Either something else is going on that we don't know about, or this guy has gotten things wrong on a consistent basis if his bosses were that upset. I work in a newsroom, and this would not get to any of us enough to make us quit.

If you can't handle the heat then you shouldn't work in radio/tv/any profession that deals with living human beings. Somehow this is all Ken Jenning's fault. *Insert Mormon insult here*

Way to bring religion into this, Rory. Go back to watching Fox News and we'll call you when this is over.

The issue isn't with Jennings, but more his neurotic and obsessive fan base. To be fair, they're in the minority, but their knack for being overly sensitive and borderline obnoxious about their boy Jennings is incredibly annoying.
